The Alliance for School Choice board of directors and staff were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former board member Joseph E. Robert, Jr.
Joe was a longtime and unwavering leader in the effort to bring educational opportunity to thousands of disadvantaged children in the nation’s capital. As Chairman of the Washington Scholarship Fund and Fight for Children, Joe was incredibly generous with his time and financial resources, displaying an unrivaled commitment to helping those most in need. Having worked with Joe for years, I saw that generosity firsthand. It was the catalyst for his unyielding commitment to making sure that a quality education was not just something for the wealthy, a commitment that has helped positively affect the lives of thousands of children from low-income families in D.C.
Despite a long-term battle with cancer, he continued to fight valiantly through his illness, making an especially prominent mark in recent years, when the fate of the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program was jeopardized. I deeply admired Joe for continuing to be a strong presence and an inspiration to allies and supporters, as they worked successfully to save and expand the OSP. We are grateful for Joe’s service and leadership on the Alliance board and, most importantly, for all he contributed to creating a brighter future for so many children. The world was made a better place thanks to Joe’s amazing contributions.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Joe’s family and loved ones.
